Under the supervision of the department of nursing, this position as a licensed registered nurse bears responsibility and accountability for the nursing care patients receive within the realms of standards of nursing practice, nurse's code of ethics and the Indiana Nurse Practice Act. The ED/ICU Float Nurse will be housed within the Emergency Department as their primary/home department; however, ICU staffing needs will take priority when additional nursing coverage is required in the ICU .
During each shift, the Registered Nurse – ED/ICU Float will work as a member of the nursing team and provide direct patient care based on patient census, acuity, staffing needs, and operational requirements. The nurse may begin a shift in the ED and be reassigned to the ICU when needed to maintain appropriate ICU staffing and support safe patient care.
The ED/ICU Float Nurse may also be assigned to either department for an extended period to assist with staffing vacancies, employee absences, vacations, leaves of absence, or other operational needs.
