Charts on healthcare jobs and pay, free to publish

CareJobs. Now reads the career sites of about 1,800 US hospitals, health systems and care employers every night. Each chart below comes from that read: it names the day its postings were read, sits beside the table it is drawn from, and is yours to publish with a credit to CareJobs.Now.

Charts

Dated charts and their tables

A published chart is never changed. When the postings are read again for a new chart, it gets its own date and its own files, so a figure you quote can always be found here.

  • Where hospital RN job ads state the pay. The share of staff registered nurse postings that state an hourly or yearly rate, in the 42 states with at least 100 such postings: from 96% in North Dakota and 94% in Washington to 6% in Michigan and Ohio and 3% in Louisiana. In Washington, Minnesota (90%), New Jersey (85%) and New York (82%), whose laws require pay in job postings, most ads state it; North and South Dakota score high without such a law because their largest health systems state pay on their own.

How it was counted: Staff RN postings only (travel, per diem, LPN, leadership and educator jobs left out), one count per job, from the career sites of about 1,800 US hospitals, health systems and care employers. A posting counts when it states an hourly or yearly rate.

Postings read on October 22, 2026.

  • RN job ads post more than the BLS wage in most states. The median hourly rate in registered nurse postings that state pay, against the BLS median wage for RNs in the same state (May 2025). The posted median is higher in 30 of the 43 places measured (42 states and Washington, DC), most in Utah (+33%), Tennessee (+25%) and Kansas (+23%); it is lower in New York (−11%), Nevada (−8%) and Maryland (−6%).

How it was counted: RN postings that state an hourly rate (a range counts once), in states with at least 30 of them. BLS measures what every employed RN earned in May 2025; postings show what employers hiring now advertise, so wage growth since then explains part of any gap, and which employers state pay shapes each state's figure. Small samples (Idaho 37, Maine 40, Oklahoma 41, Utah 50 postings) move more from week to week.

  • Rural RN jobs post less than metro RN jobs. The median hourly pay posted for staff registered nurse jobs in rural (non-metro) counties and in metro counties. Rural is lower in 16 of the 19 states with enough postings, by 2% or more in 14; the widest gap is North Carolina, $36.00 against $46.82 (−23%). The table also counts healthcare job listings in rural and in metro counties for all 50 states and DC.

How it was counted: Postings dated within 45 days on the career sites of about 1,700 employers. Rural means counties outside any metropolitan area (OMB delineation of July 2023); each town is placed in the county most of its people live in. Staff RNs only: no LPN, leadership, educator, travel, per diem, contract or staffing agency jobs. A median is shown where at least 15 rural (10 metro) postings state pay.

The median hourly pay posted for nursing assistants and patient care techs (CNA, PCT, nurse aide) in the 32 states with enough postings that state pay: from $27.83 in Washington and $27.45 in California to $18.90 in Georgia and $18.12 in South Carolina. The table adds caregivers and home health aides (27 states).

A state is shown where at least 10 postings from 3 or more employers state pay and no one employer has more than 60% of them. Home care agencies are under-covered next to hospitals.
