Frequently asked questions

Which healthcare employers pay you while they train you?

The jobs here are the ones whose employer hires you as a trainee, a nurse aide in training or an apprentice: you are on the payroll from the first day and learn the job there, often with the class, the exam or the certificate paid for. Hospitals train medical assistants, patient care techs, pharmacy techs, sterile processing techs, lab and imaging techs this way, and nursing homes and home care agencies train nurse aides.

Can I get paid to become a CNA?

Yes. Many nursing homes, hospitals and home care agencies hire nurse aides in training (NAT or CNA trainee jobs) and pay for the state nurse aide class and exam, usually in exchange for working for them for a set time after you pass. Look for the CNA trainee jobs here, and for the classes themselves our healthcare training programs page.

How much do trainee jobs pay?

The paid trainee and apprentice jobs open today that state an hourly rate post a median of $19.09 an hour for cnas & pcts, $21.95 an hour for nurses, $23 an hour for pharmacy, $18.54 an hour for medical assistants and $26 an hour for mental health (the middle of each posted range). Many pay more once you finish the training or pass the certificate, and some state both rates.

Do I need experience or a certificate to apply?

Usually not: that is what the training is for. Most ask for a high school diploma or GED, and some for a BLS card or a background check; an imaging or lab apprenticeship may ask for some college science, and a nurse training program is for licensed nurses learning a new specialty. Each posting says what it asks for.

Which employers have the most paid trainee and apprentice jobs?

Of the jobs open today, the most are at Norton Healthcare (25), CoxHealth (22), HH Health System (20), Sanford Health (12) and Stony Brook Medicine (12).
