At RWJBarnabas Health, Audiology Technicians play an important role in supporting early identification of hearing concerns and promoting the health and well-being of newborns. As a member of the Audiology Services team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, you will perform newborn hearing screenings for designated infants prior to hospital discharge under the direction and supervision of an Audiologist. Working collaboratively with Audiologists, nursing personnel, physicians, and other healthcare team members, you will help ensure accurate screening procedures, timely documentation, proper equipment maintenance, and effective communication of screening results. Joining RWJBarnabas Health means becoming part of New Jersey's largest integrated academic healthcare system, where patient-centered care, teamwork, quality, and professional development are central to delivering exceptional healthcare services.

A typical day for an Audiology Technician may include:

  • Reporting to the nursery at scheduled times and coordinating screening activities with nursing personnel to support efficient patient care and timely completion of newborn hearing screenings.
  • Selecting and preparing infants for hearing screening in accordance with program policies, screening procedures, and nursery requirements.
  • Operating hearing screening equipment according to established instructions, completed training, and demonstrated competency requirements.
  • Accurately recording screening results and providing screening information to the appropriate Audiologist, nursing personnel, and other designated healthcare team members.
  • Recognizing unusual occurrences, potential screening concerns, or other problems and promptly reporting them to the supervising Audiologist, nurse manager, or other designated personnel.
  • Performing daily equipment checks and maintaining hearing screening equipment in good working condition to support reliable screening operations.
  • Monitoring supplies and notifying the program supervisor of low inventory, equipment malfunctions, or other operational concerns.
  • Completing required screening records, logs, and other documentation accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Maintaining strict patient confidentiality and protecting the privacy of patient records, screening results, and communications with families and healthcare personnel.
  • Communicating professionally and compassionately with parents, families, visitors, nursing personnel, physicians, Audiologists, and other hospital staff.
  • Assisting the Manager of Speech and Hearing or designated supervisor with assigned departmental responsibilities and operational activities.
  • Participating in required hospital orientation programs, ongoing training, competency assessments, and continuing education activities.
  • Following hospital policies and procedures related to patient safety, equipment operation, professional conduct, and workplace safety.
  • Wearing hospital identification with name and title clearly visible while on duty.
  • Supporting departmental quality improvement initiatives and contributing to efficient, patient-centered hearing screening services.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

  • You communicate effectively and professionally with Audiologists, nurses, physicians, families, and other healthcare team members.
  • You recognize the importance of patient confidentiality, safety, and compassionate family-centered care.
  • You are organized, dependable, and able to manage scheduled screening responsibilities while responding appropriately to changing clinical needs.
  • You demonstrate sound judgment and understand when to report screening concerns, equipment malfunctions, or unusual occurrences to the appropriate personnel.
  • You work well independently within the scope of your training while recognizing when guidance or assistance is needed.
  • You value teamwork, accountability, continuous learning, and quality improvement in a healthcare setting.
  • You are committed to maintaining equipment, completing required documentation, and following hospital policies and procedures.
