About the job
Help Create a Safe, Supportive Healing Environment
We are seeking a dedicated Safety Officer to join our Behavioral Health team - someone who is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and therapeutic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This role is essential in supporting individuals during vulnerable moments while ensuring safety, dignity, and professionalism are always upheld.
Our Behavioral Health Safety Officers are part of a highly collaborative team that partners closely with clinical staff, leadership, and law enforcement when needed. You’ll be working in a dynamic environment where every day is different, your presence matters, and your ability to stay calm under pressure makes a real impact.
We value teamwork, continuous learning, and professional growth - and we provide training and development opportunities to help you build a strong career in healthcare safety and behavioral health support.
What You’ll Do
- Provide a visible, proactive presence across hospital buildings and grounds to support a safe behavioral health environment
- Use sound judgment and discretion when responding to situations involving safety concerns or potential criminal activity on hospital property
- Actively identify, report, and help prevent safety risks, security incidents, and behaviors that may impact the care environment
- Respond to calls for assistance from hospital staff, patients, visitors, and law enforcement partners
- De-escalate tense, dynamic, and rapidly evolving situations using professionalism, empathy, and training
- Support patient care teams when behavioral interventions or safety-related assistance is needed, including patient restraint when required and appropriate
- Ensure proper screening of individuals entering the facility to maintain a secure environment
- Conduct regular patrols of hospital buildings, grounds, and parking areas, identifying safety and fire hazards
- Enforce hospital policies and procedures that protect patients, staff, and property from theft, unauthorized access, or unsafe conditions
- Assist with emergency response situations, including fire alarms and coordination with police, fire, and emergency management teams
- Support safe traffic flow and parking operations, including monitoring fire lanes and issuing appropriate notices when necessary
- Provide directions and assistance to visitors, patients, and staff as needed
- Collaborate with hospital leadership and the Public Safety team to strengthen a culture of safety and respect
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and ongoing professional development opportunities
What We’re Looking For
- Working knowledge of computers and common software programs
- Valid, non-restricted Indiana driver’s license
- Ability to successfully complete required training after hire
- Strong ability to remain calm and professional when working with individuals in crisis or exhibiting aggressive behavior
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, and team members in high-stress situations
- Commitment to teamwork, safety, and providing a supportive care environment
What We Offer
- A meaningful role where your work directly supports patient safety and care
- A collaborative and supportive team environment
- Comprehensive training and ongoing skill development
- Opportunities to grow within healthcare safety, security, and behavioral health support roles
- A workplace culture built on respect, teamwork, and continuous improvement
