Job Summary

WakeMed is seeking compassionate and motivated new graduate Registered Nurses (RNs) to join our Ambulatory Care Nurse Residency Program beginning in February 2027. As an Ambulatory Care RN Resident, you will develop the clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and care coordination skills needed to provide exceptional patient-centered care in an outpatient setting. Working alongside physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary care teams, you will coordinate care plans, advocate for patients and families, promote wellness, and help patients successfully manage their health within the community. Guided by WakeMed's WakeWay to Excellence, the ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, and WakeMed's Patient & Family-Centered Care model, you will build a strong foundation for a rewarding nursing career while making a direct impact on patient outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care in an ambulatory clinic environment.
  • Partner with providers and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate and manage patient care plans.
  • Identify patient needs, health risks, and opportunities for early intervention and prevention.
  • Educate patients and families on treatment plans, medications, preventive care, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and trusted resource throughout the healthcare journey.
  • Facilitate communication between patients, families, providers, specialists, and community resources.
  • Support care management initiatives that improve patient outcomes and enhance the patient experience.
  • Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to support high-quality outpatient care delivery.
  • Document care accurately and maintain compliance with organizational, professional, and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in the Nurse Residency Program, professional development activities, and ongoing learning opportunities.

What We're Looking For

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program with a December 2026 graduation date.
  • Current or pending North Carolina RN licensure prior to start date.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to adapt and remain resilient in a fast-paced ambulatory care setting.
  • Commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centered care.
  • Passion for patient advocacy, education, and health promotion.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Previous healthcare, clinical, volunteer, or patient care experience preferred.
  • Commitment to professional growth and nursing excellence.

Make a Direct Impact

As an Ambulatory Care RN Resident, you will play a vital role in improving the health and well-being of our communities by:

  • Delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in an outpatient setting.
  • Supporting preventive care, chronic disease management, and wellness initiatives.
  • Helping patients navigate the healthcare system and access needed resources.
  • Improving continuity of care through proactive care coordination and follow-up.
  • Contributing to positive patient outcomes and an exceptional patient experience.
  • Advocating for safe, evidence-based nursing practices that support quality care delivery.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Nursing Advocacy

Success in ambulatory care relies on strong partnerships across the healthcare continuum. In this role, you will collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, care managers, social workers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to create coordinated, comprehensive care plans that meet each patient's unique needs. You will serve as a voice for patients and families, champion nursing best practices, and contribute to a culture of clinical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
