Job Summary
The University of Colorado seeks an exceptional physician leader to serve as the Chair of Pathology. This senior leadership role is responsible for advancing the strategic, clinical, educational, and research missions of the Department. The Chair will foster excellence in patient care, innovative research, top-tier education and training programs, and will champion equity and inclusion. As a key member of the institution's leadership team, the Chair will collaborate across disciplines to achieve strategic goals and establish the Department as a national model for integrated academic and clinical excellence in pathology.
This position requires a dynamic, passionate, and experienced physician/scientist leader with a proven track record across the spectrum of individual scholarship, collaborative academic leadership, clinical and research program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, community engagement, and the design and implementation of effective programs within and across complex
organizations.

- Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty and departmental leaders from diverse backgrounds. Ensure an atmosphere of respect, professional support, and development for all stakeholders.

- Ensure a deliberate and priority-driven investment into research, educational, and clinical activities for the Department and institution.
- Provide the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within pathology and related disciplines. Work with other leaders at the University of Colorado to build and grow areas of acknowledged clinical excellence.

- Ensure delivery of excellent clinical education and advanced training to medical students, residents, and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the Department and ensure learners are receiving comprehensive training and development opportunities.
- Set and execute the Department's digital pathology strategy, including whole slide imaging, image management, and integration of computational tools into the diagnostic workflow, capitalizing on the concurrent AP laboratory expansion and Epic Beaker migration.
- Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the budget so that it encompasses all funding sources and complies with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines.

Why Join Us
The Department of Pathology (DOP) is one of the largest and most comprehensive academic pathology departments in the Rocky Mountain region. Over the past 15 years, the Department has more than doubled in size, growing from approximately 40 to nearly 120 faculty in parallel with the remarkable expansion of its
hospital-based affiliates and the greater Denver community. Today, the Department is home to a robust cohort of physician and scientist faculty, including 77 MD faculty, alongside doctoral-level laboratorians, research scientists, veterinarian faculty, residents, fellows, and a large complement of technical and administrative staff.
The Department has a distinctive, centralized operational and financial structure organized without sections or internal centers. While faculty are widely distributed across multiple buildings and hospitals on the Anschutz Medical Campus, this horizontal model promotes administrative efficiency, intradepartmental coordination, and collaboration across subspecialty areas rather than a siloed, vertical organization. The senior leadership tier includes 13 Vice Chairs along with numerous laboratory and program directors, reflecting an intentional
investment in career development and leadership at every academic rank. The Department has proven to be a notable producer of leaders, having graduated faculty into five departmental chairs and two deanships.
Vision, Mission, and Values
- Vision: To be a premier academic Department of Pathology for the region and worldwide, grounded in
- outstanding educational, research, and clinical programs.
- Mission: To discover, define, and transform.
- Values: Education and lifelong learning; medical knowledge; diagnostic excellence; integrity and professionalism; diversity in its people and its discipline; resource stewardship; innovation, discovery, and translation; and collaboration.
Several features distinguish the Department from its academic peers: a 100
percent subspecialized, subspecialty board-certified academic faculty practice across its affiliated sites; anatomic and clinical pathology coverage 24/7 by 28 subspecialty teams; three nationally recognized reference laboratories; and one of the few fellowship programs of its kind in breast, gynecologic, and neonatal pathology, attracting fellows from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The Department also provides the only neuropathology consultation service in Colorado and five surrounding states.
